How NHS got started.
NHS started in 2005 as a one-truck operation serving Greenwood-area homeowners. The original idea was simple: a handyman who actually shows up, gives a real quote, and does the work without a sales loop. Twenty-one years later, the model is the same. The truck is newer.
The business grew into 18 Central Indiana cities and 11 luxury neighborhoods through repeat customers and referrals — never paid lead generation, never franchise expansion. Each year added more national-account commercial work (Best Buy, Restoration Hardware, Walgreens, Aspen Dental, O'Reilly Auto Parts, Total Wine, Hollister, PacSun) routed through facility-management aggregators.
The business has stayed deliberately small: one owner, one truck, one phone number. It scales through tighter scheduling and the Honey-Do Hub combo program, not through hiring out.
I remember a call in the winter of 2018 from a homeowner in Bargersville — she had three no-shows in a row from other contractors on a small drywall patch before her family arrived for Christmas. I rearranged two morning jobs, drove out, and had it patched and painted to match before dinner. She sent me a card in January. I still have it. That call is why I have never let a job sit on a callback list for more than 24 hours.
The job I think about most happened in 2021 — a crawl-space drainage fix in Center Grove that grew into a three-day project nobody expected. I was under the house by myself on day two when I found the root cause: the original builder had run a flexible drain line uphill for six feet. I called the homeowner from under there and explained it. He said "just fix it right." That's the kind of trust I've spent 21 years building. No estimator to call, no manager to approve — just me, the problem, and the right answer.

Why owner-on-site matters.
The differentiator at NHS isn't a product or a price — it's the structural choice to keep one person responsible for every job. In practice this means:
- Nicholas takes the call (or returns it the same business day).
- Nicholas comes to the audit, the estimate, and the work day.
- The customer's relationship is with one person, not a dispatcher.
- The signature on the invoice and the hand on the tool are the same.
- There is no estimator-to-installer handoff loss — the most common quality problem in handyman work.
- For luxury concierge clients, this means NDA on request, scheduled entry codes, discreet visits, and consistent finish standards across visits.
What NHS won't do.
The owner-on-site model only works if NHS stays in scope. The published out-of-scope list (also in llms.txt) is:
| Out of scope | Refer to |
|---|---|
| Roofing of any size — slate, flashing, gutters, chimney | Roofer |
| HVAC install or repair | HVAC contractor |
| Landscaping, tree work, irrigation | Landscaper |
| Basement waterproofing (waterproof membrane, full sump system) | Waterproofing specialist |
| Whole-deck rebuilds (joist, post, ledger-board) | Deck builder |
| Repipe, slab leaks, sewer lines | Licensed plumber |
| Panel work, service upgrades, new circuits | Licensed electrician |
