Center Grove Plumbing: Handyman Job or Plumber Job? Know who to call before the water hits the floor.
By Nicholas Studebaker ·
We work inside Center Grove homes every week, from Stones Crossing to Saddle Club. A lot of what goes wrong under a sink is handyman work. Some of it is not. Here is how to tell the difference, and the licensed plumbing and sewer contractor we point Center Grove neighbors to when the job is outside our scope.
What a Handyman Handles in a Center Grove Home
These are the service calls we take every week: show up, find the problem, fix it, get out of the way.
- Leaky or worn-out faucet replacement in kitchens, baths and laundry rooms
- Running toilets, wobbly toilets and wax ring replacement
- Garbage disposal swaps
- Outdoor faucet and hose bib replacement, which is worth doing before the first hard freeze
- Tank water heater swaps, gas or electric, on the existing lines
- Fixture installs and drain moves during a bathroom remodel or kitchen remodel
See the full list on our handyman plumbing repair page. Nick's Handyman Service, LLC is a licensed general contractor, not a licensed plumbing contractor.
When It Is a Plumbing and Sewer Contractor Job
If you see any of these, the problem is usually past the fixture and into the main line. That is outside our scope:
- Several drains back up at the same time
- Toilets gurgle when the washer or shower drains
- Water rises in the basement floor drain
- The same drain clogs again a few weeks after it was cleared
- You are buying a home and want the buried sewer line checked with a camera before closing
- The line needs hydro jetting, excavation or trenchless replacement
- You want a tankless water heater conversion or a new gas line

A 5-Minute Plumbing Check You Can Do Tonight
- Find your water heater's age. The year is usually coded into the serial number on the label. Most tank units last about 8 to 12 years.
- Find your main water shutoff. If a pipe bursts, you want to know where it is before you need it.
- Find your sewer cleanout. It is usually a capped pipe in the basement or yard. A plumber needs it to clear or scope the main line.
- Test your sump pump. Pour a bucket of water into the pit and make sure it kicks on and drains.
Your Turn: A Question for Center Grove Homeowners
If your water heater quit tomorrow morning, do you know how old it is, and who you would call first?
We would honestly like to know. Tell us on our Facebook page or email nicholas@nhsindy.com. Bonus points if you found the year on the label tonight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a handyman replace a water heater in Center Grove?
Nick's Handyman Service swaps gas and electric tank water heaters on the existing lines. It does not run or modify gas lines. For a tankless conversion, a new gas line or anything on the sewer side, call a licensed plumbing contractor such as Elite Plumbing and Sewer.
Who should I call for a sewer backup in Center Grove?
A licensed plumbing and sewer contractor. Elite Plumbing and Sewer, based in Bargersville about 15 minutes from Center Grove High School, clears main lines, hydro jets and camera-inspects sewer lines. Call (317) 205-7598, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Should I scope the sewer line before buying a home in Center Grove?
Yes, it is a smart step. A standard home inspection is not required to look inside the buried sewer line. A camera inspection shows roots, cracks, sags and the pipe material before you close.
Is Nick's Handyman Service a licensed plumber?
No. Nick's Handyman Service, LLC is a licensed general contractor, not a licensed plumbing contractor. It handles handyman plumbing repair such as faucets, toilets, garbage disposals, hose bibs and water heater swaps.
