Ceiling Fan Install in WestfieldTall Ceilings Done Right.
Westfield custom homes have 14-18ft ceilings. Installing a fan up there requires scaffolding, the right downrod, and a licensed electrical pull.
Why Most Ceiling Fan Installs Fail
1) Wrong electrical box (standard junction box, not fan-rated). 2) Wrong downrod length — fan too close to ceiling, airflow choked. 3) Unbalanced blades. 4) No licensed electrical work on a circuit that needed a permit.
Fan-Rated Box: Non-Negotiable
Standard ceiling junction boxes can support a light fixture but NOT the torque of a spinning fan. Over 2-5 years, the fan sags, wobbles, eventually falls. Fan-rated boxes cost $15-$25, installed. We never install a fan without one.
Downrod Length on Tall Ceilings
Rule: blades should be 8-10ft from the floor. For a 14ft ceiling, you need a 36-48" downrod. For 18ft, a 60-72". Wrong-length downrod = ineffective airflow + noise.
Smart Fans & Remotes
Modern fans (Hunter, Minka, Monte Carlo) come Wi-Fi-enabled — paired to Alexa, Google, or a hub. We install, pair, test. Standard smart-fan install adds $50-$100 over basic install.
Cost for Westfield Tall-Ceiling Installs
Standard 8ft install: $150-$225. New switch-loop pull: $275-$450. Tall ceiling (12-18ft) with scaffolding: $300-$475. Fan itself: separate ($150-$600 typical).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a handyman install a ceiling fan?
Licensed + insured handyman, yes. Ceiling fans need a fan-rated box and licensed electrical work. We do dozens per month.
How high should ceiling fans be mounted?
Blades should be 8-10ft from the floor. Tall ceilings need longer downrods (36-72") to hit that height.
