Frequently Asked Questions
Can a handyman replace an outlet in Indiana?
Yes. Like-for-like outlet replacement is within handyman scope in Indiana when the existing circuit, box, and wiring are unchanged. NHS swaps standard duplex, GFCI, USB-integrated, and 20A outlets across all 18 Central Indiana cities we serve. Licensed and insured since 2005.
Do you do panel work or service upgrades?
No. Panel swaps, service upgrades, sub-panels, and meter work are out of scope for NHS — those require a licensed master electrician under Indiana code. We refer those jobs to a licensed electrician we trust. NHS sticks to light residential work: outlets, switches, fixtures, GFCIs, dimmers, and ceiling fans on existing fan-rated boxes.
Do you run new circuits or add new electrical lines?
No. New circuit runs, branch-circuit additions, and any work that pulls new wire from the panel are outside handyman scope and we refer to a licensed master electrician. NHS handles replacements and like-for-like installs only — if the box, wire, and circuit already exist, we can put a new device on it.
Can you install a ceiling fan if there is no fan-rated box?
We install ceiling fans on existing fan-rated boxes only. If your current ceiling box is light-fixture-rated (not fan-rated), the box must be upgraded to a fan-rated, support-listed box first. That upgrade is within our scope when accessible from above; if it requires opening drywall and re-routing structure, we will scope it honestly or refer out.
Do I need a permit to replace an outlet, switch, or light fixture?
Generally no — like-for-like replacement of outlets, switches, and light fixtures on the existing circuit does not require a permit in most Central Indiana jurisdictions (Greenwood, Indianapolis, Carmel, Fishers, Westfield, Zionsville, Noblesville, Avon). Permits are typically required for new circuits, panel work, and service upgrades — which are out of NHS scope and referred to a licensed electrician. Always confirm with your local building department for your specific situation.
Will the work pass inspection?
Yes. All NHS electrical work is done to current NEC and Indiana code: proper grounding, correct wire gauge, GFCI/AFCI where required, tamper-resistant outlets in living spaces, secured boxes, and torque-spec terminations. We do not bury splices, leave open boxes, or improvise grounds. If your home pre-dates current code (knob-and-tube, ungrounded two-prong), we will tell you what is and is not safe to swap before we touch anything.
Can you install a GFCI outlet?
Yes. GFCIs are code-required in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, basements, laundry areas, and outdoor outlets. Swap-in GFCI cost: $85–$165 each, including the outlet. We test the GFCI under load before we leave.
Do you handle smart switches and dimmers?
Yes — Lutron Caseta, Leviton Decora Smart, Kasa, and similar. Installed and paired to your app or hub before we leave. Standard smart-switch install: $125–$175 each. Three-way smart switch setups are scoped on-site since the existing wiring decides the path.
