A standard pre-hung exterior entry-door replacement runs 4–6 hours from arrival to clean-up: remove old slab and jamb, prep the rough opening, set the new unit plumb and level, shim, fasten, foam, install threshold and weatherstripping, hang the lockset and deadbolt, and verify weather-tight close on every latch. A storm door layered on the same trip adds about an hour.
Can you replace a door without replacing the frame?
Yes — a slab-only swap is doable when the existing jamb is plumb, the hinge mortises line up, and the frame is not rotted. We mortise the new slab to match the existing hinges and bore for the existing lockset. Slab-only interior: $185–$295 labor. If the jamb is twisted or the rough opening is out of square, a full pre-hung swap is the right call — we'll tell you on-site before we charge you for the wrong fix.
