Winter RepairsDrywall and Ceiling Repair After a Burst Pipe or Leak
A frozen pipe or an ice dam leaves two problems: the leak, and the ceiling or wall it ruined. Once the leak is fixed and everything has dried out, the second one is our job.
Short answer: after a burst pipe, an ice-dam leak or an appliance leak, Nick's Handyman Service rebuilds the damage once the source is repaired and the area is dry. We cut out the wet or stained drywall and ceiling, patch it, match the texture, seal the stain, repaint, and replace the baseboard and trim. Most small patches run about $350 with paint included. Emergency response, water extraction and drying are outside our scope.

The First Hour After a Leak
These steps protect you and the house before any repair starts.
- Stop the water. Shut off the main water valve. In most Central Indiana homes it sits where the water line enters the house, often in a basement, crawlspace or utility closet.
- Kill the power to wet areas. If water is near outlets, fixtures or a ceiling light, turn that circuit off at the breaker panel, but only if you can reach the panel without standing in or touching water. If you can't, leave the area and call your electric utility.
- Photograph everything before anything is moved or cleaned up. Your insurance carrier will want it.
- Call your insurance carrier on anything bigger than a small drip.
- Move air. Pull out wet rugs and move furniture away. Open cabinet doors and run fans so the area starts drying.
What We Rebuild
Once the source has been repaired and the area is dry, the rebuild goes in the same order every time. We cut out the damaged section back to sound material, replace it, tape and finish the seams, match the texture, seal the stain with a stain-blocking primer so it doesn't bleed back through, and repaint. Where water ran down to the floor, we replace the swollen baseboard and trim too.
The most common winter leaks are a split pipe in an exterior wall or ceiling, an ice dam or overflowing gutter backing meltwater in at the eaves, a supply line or water heater that let go, and a toilet or tub that leaked into the ceiling below.

Preventing the Next One
Most winter leaks trace back to something a fall visit would have caught. A hose left on a spigot, pipe running through an uninsulated garage or crawlspace, or gutters packed with leaves. ENERGY STAR and the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor both point to sealing and insulating as the first defense. Our freeze prep and gutter cleaning visits handle the rest.
We book Monday through Friday, 8 to 6, and Saturday, 9 to 2. Evenings, Sundays and other after-hours visits can be arranged ahead of time at a $225 minimum. We are not an unscheduled emergency service. Nick's Handyman Service, LLC is a licensed general contractor, not a licensed plumbing or electrical contractor. Our plumbing and electrical work is repair and replacement on existing lines and circuits.
Common Questions
Can drywall be saved after a pipe bursts?
Sometimes. Drywall that got briefly damp and dried quickly can often stay, with the stain sealed and the area repainted. Drywall that soaked, sagged, crumbled at the bottom edge or stayed wet for days should be cut out and replaced. We check it with you at the assessment visit and only replace what has to go.
How long should I wait before repairing drywall after a leak?
Until the wall or ceiling cavity is fully dry. Closing up a wet cavity traps moisture behind the new drywall. On a small leak that can mean a few days with fans running and the damaged section opened up. On a larger loss, drying is handled through your insurance carrier before any rebuild starts.
Do you fix the burst pipe itself?
No. We don't do burst-pipe emergency response, water extraction or drying. If a pipe has split and water is moving, shut off the main water valve and call your insurance carrier. Our part starts once the line is repaired and the area is dry. To prevent the next one, see freeze prep and frost-free sillcocks.
Will insurance cover drywall repair from a frozen pipe?
That depends on your policy and the cause, and only your carrier can answer it. What we can do is give you a written, itemized estimate and before and after photos to send to the adjuster.
Can you match my ceiling texture?
Usually, yes. Knockdown, orange peel, light skim and smooth ceilings are all matched by hand. Popcorn ceilings are harder to blend, and sometimes the better answer is to repaint the whole ceiling plane so there is no visible patch line.
What if there is mold?
Visible mold growth is remediation work, and that is outside our scope. If we open a wall and find it, we stop and tell you before going further. Drying the area quickly after a leak is the best way to keep it from starting.
Do you repair plaster walls and ceilings?
Yes. In older homes we repair plaster with bonding agents, mesh over cracks and careful plaster-to-drywall transitions, instead of skimming over the problem.
