Short answer: Nick's Handyman Service handles the fall and winter work that keeps a Central Indiana house dry, warm and ready for guests. That means freeze prep and hose bibs before the first freeze, which averages October 26 in Indianapolis. It also covers gutter cleaning after the leaves drop, drafty doors and storm doors, holiday prep, and drywall, ceiling and interior work once exterior season ends. Call (317) 893-3717 or send your list online.

What to Book, Month by Month

Central Indiana's cold season runs on a fairly predictable calendar. The National Weather Service office in Indianapolis puts the average first frost (36 degrees) at the Indianapolis airport around October 17, the first freeze (32 degrees) around October 26 and the first hard freeze (28 degrees) around November 5, using 1991-2020 normals. The normal January low is 20.9 degrees, per the same office's local climate normals. Everything below is timed around those numbers.

Cold-Snap Checklist for Your Pipes

These are the steps the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor and Citizens Energy Group recommend when Central Indiana drops below freezing. They cost nothing, and they prevent most frozen-pipe damage.

  • Unhook every garden hose. A hose left on a frost-free spigot traps water in the valve, and it splits inside the wall.
  • Keep the heat at 55 degrees or higher when you're away, including on holiday trips.
  • Open the sink cabinets on exterior walls so warm air reaches the pipes.
  • Keep the garage door closed if water lines run through the garage.
  • On the coldest nights, let a faucet on an exterior wall run at a pencil-thin stream.

The fix that makes those steps less necessary is done in the fall: freeze prep and frost-free sillcocks.

Why Fall Work Costs Less Than Winter Repairs

Most expensive winter repairs start as a cheap fall job that got skipped. A door sweep worn flat lets cold air in all winter. A gutter full of leaves holds water against the fascia, and the meltwater ends up in a ceiling. A spigot that dripped all summer splits in January.

Fall work is scheduled and predictable, and it gets done in daylight. Winter repairs come with water on the floor and a calendar you don't control. ENERGY STAR estimates that air sealing plus attic and crawlspace insulation saves a typical home an average of 15 percent on heating and cooling costs. Door, window and attic-hatch sealing is one part of that; insulation is outside our scope.

Our Winter Work

This is Nicholas Studebaker, the owner, on a plumbing repair in Greenwood in January 2026. We work through the winter. On every job, the person who quotes it is the person who shows up to do it.

We book Monday through Friday, 8 to 6, and Saturday, 9 to 2. Evenings, Sundays and other after-hours visits can be arranged ahead of time at a $225 minimum. We are not an unscheduled emergency service.

So you can plan around it, here is what is outside our scope in winter: furnace, heat pump and other HVAC work; snow removal; roof replacement and any work on steep or icy roofs (we only patch one or two shingles on a walkable roof); gutter replacement; running or modifying gas lines; new electrical circuits; and burst-pipe emergency response, water extraction or drying. Nick's Handyman Service, LLC is a licensed general contractor, not a licensed plumbing or electrical contractor. Our plumbing and electrical work is repair and replacement on existing lines and circuits.

Common Questions

What fall maintenance should I do before winter in Indiana?

Disconnect the hoses and shut down and drain the outdoor faucets. Insulate exposed pipe in the crawlspace and garage. Replace worn weatherstripping and door sweeps, caulk exterior gaps while it is still warm enough for caulk to cure, and clean the gutters once the leaves are down. Our fall home maintenance checklist walks through each one.

When is the first freeze in Indianapolis?

The National Weather Service office in Indianapolis puts the average first freeze (32 degrees) at the airport around October 26 and the first hard freeze (28 degrees) around November 5, based on 1991-2020 normals. Frost usually shows up around October 17. Rural and low-lying yards in places like Bargersville, Trafalgar and Center Grove often freeze earlier than the city.

When should I book fall gutter cleaning?

After most of the leaves are down, which in Central Indiana usually means early to mid November. Cleaning in early October often means a second cleaning later. Oaks hold their leaves late, so homes with a lot of oaks are better off with a late-November visit.

Do you work in the winter?

Yes, all winter. We book Monday through Friday, 8 to 6, and Saturday, 9 to 2. Evenings, Sundays and other after-hours visits can be arranged ahead of time at a $225 minimum. We are not an unscheduled emergency service. January and February are good months for interior painting, drywall, trim, flooring and bathroom or kitchen remodels, because exterior work has stopped.

Do you do furnace service, snow removal or holiday lights?

No. Furnace and other HVAC work, snow removal and roofline work are outside our scope. Our winter work is the house itself: freeze prep, doors and windows, repairs on existing plumbing and electrical, drywall, paint, trim, flooring and remodels.

Is this the Weatherization Assistance Program?

No. The Weatherization Assistance Program is an income-qualified state program run through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority and local agencies. Nick's Handyman Service is a private contractor. You hire us directly, and we quote the work in writing first.

How much does a fall or winter handyman visit cost?

There is a $150 minimum on small jobs, and most small jobs run about $350. Bundling helps. Hose bibs, pipe insulation, weatherstripping on two or three doors and a garage door seal done in one visit cost less than separate trips. Bigger work like a storm door ($260 to $455 labor plus the door) is quoted in writing before we start.
