Winter Garage Door RepairGarage Door Won't Open in the Cold? Winter Garage Door Repair
Garage door repair searches in Indiana peak in December and January, and the reason is mechanical: cold steel, stiff grease and a door that is harder to move find whatever part was already worn. Here is what usually fails, what you can check safely, and what it costs to fix.
Short answer: in the cold, a garage door that will not open is usually a broken spring, a snapped cable, an opener straining against a stiff door, or a bottom seal frozen to the floor. One that will not close is usually a safety sensor out of line. On single-bay residential doors, springs run $185 to $460, cables $185 to $315 and sensor fixes $185 to $285. Call or text (317) 893-3717.

What Fails in the Cold, and What It Costs
| What you notice | Usual cause | Typical price |
|---|---|---|
| Loud bang, then the door will not lift or the opener strains | Broken torsion or extension spring | $185 to $460 |
| Door hangs crooked or one side drops | Snapped or frayed lift cable | $185 to $315 |
| Door starts down, then reverses back up | Safety sensors out of line, dirty or wired loose | $185 to $285 |
| Door is loud, jerky or binds in the track | Dry rollers and hinges, bent track | Track and roller tune-up, $150 to $285 |
| Opener hums but the door barely moves | A spring that has lost tension, or a worn opener | Spring $185 to $460, or opener replacement $250 to $465 labor plus the opener |
A $150 trip minimum and a 2 to 3 hour visit minimum apply to garage door service calls. Prices are from our garage door repair and installation page, where new door installs are priced too.
Safe Checks Before You Call
- Look at the spring above the door. A torsion spring with a visible gap in its coils is broken. Stop there: stored spring tension can cause serious injury, so do not adjust, unwind or remove it, and do not pull the red emergency release cord while the door is open, because with a broken spring the door can drop.
- Check the sensors. Wipe both lenses near the floor and look for a steady light on each. A blinking light means they are out of line.
- Check the floor. If the bottom seal is frozen to the slab, unplug the opener first, then free it with a plastic putty knife instead of forcing the opener.
- Lubricate, lightly. A garage-door lubricant on hinges and rollers helps a stiff door in the cold; heavy grease thickens and makes it worse.
- Keep the door closed in a cold snap if water lines run through the garage, as Citizens Energy Group advises.
Why Winter Is When Garage Doors Quit
Indiana search interest in garage door repair runs above its yearly average in December and January, and "garage door repair" autocompletes locally in 14 of the 21 Central Indiana areas we checked, from Greenwood and Franklin to Carmel, Fishers and Avon. The pattern is the same every year: springs and cables that were near the end of their life fail on the first hard cold mornings, and openers that were fine in October struggle against a stiff, heavy door.
What We Do Not Do
Commercial overhead doors, multi-bay industrial doors and dock doors are outside our scope, and we are not an unscheduled emergency service. We book Monday through Friday, 8 to 6, and Saturday, 9 to 2. Evenings, Sundays and other after-hours visits can be arranged ahead of time at a $225 minimum. We are not an unscheduled emergency service.
Common Questions
Why won't my garage door open when it is cold?
The usual causes are a broken torsion spring (you may have heard a loud bang), a snapped lift cable, an opener that strains or reverses because stiff grease makes the door harder to move, or a bottom seal frozen to the slab. If the spring is broken, do not keep pressing the opener button: the opener is not built to lift the full weight of the door.
Why won't my garage door close in the winter?
Most often the safety sensors near the floor are knocked out of line or fogged, so the opener reverses. Wipe the lenses and check that both indicator lights are steady. If they still blink, a sensor fix runs $185 to $285.
Do garage door springs break more in cold weather?
Cold does not break a healthy spring, but a spring near the end of its life has less margin when the steel is cold, and that is when it tends to let go. Torsion springs are replaced in pairs for balance and longer life.
How much does it cost to fix a broken garage door spring?
Spring replacement (torsion or extension) runs $185 to $460 depending on which springs and the door size. A $150 trip minimum and a 2 to 3 hour visit minimum apply to garage door service calls. See garage door repair and installation for the full price list.
My garage door is frozen to the ground. What should I do?
Do not keep running the opener; it can tear the seal or strain the opener. Unplug the opener, break the seal free gently with a plastic putty knife, clear the ice or slush along the floor, and run the door once it moves freely. A cracked or torn bottom seal can be replaced.
Do you repair commercial overhead or multi-bay doors?
No. We work on single-bay residential garage doors only. Commercial overhead doors, multi-bay industrial doors and dock doors are outside our scope.
